10 images... William Pye designs amazing water sculptures, but his vortex fountains are even more incredible. One of his most spectacular and largest is the Charybdis, located in Seaham Hall, Sunderland, UK. He named it after the siren Charybdis featured in Homer’s tale. She stole Hercules’ oxen so Zeus struck with a thunderbolt and changed her into a ship-swallowing whirlpool. The clear cylinder holds filtered water that rushes around to create a beautiful air-core vortex. Thanks to the stairs on either side of the cylinder, viewers are able to climb up and look down into the eye of the vortex. Most of the sculpture is made from solid material. This is the reason why a water sculpture is so attractive to us.           |
